Victoria, BC (ISN) – A Charlie Strandlund sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning scored the winning run in the Applebee’s Athletics 4-3 win over the Shark Club Dodgers in Game 2 of the Victoria Mavericks Men’s Baseball League finals Wednesday night at Lambrick Park in Victoria.
The third and deciding game of the Rithet Cup finals, will now take place Thursday night at 6:00 pm at Lambrick Park.
Unlike Tuesday’s night’s high scoring opener, tonight’s game featured a tense pitching battle between the A’s Shawn Loglisci and the Dodger’s Brendan Orr, both of whom went the distance for their team and both of whom worked their way out of trouble on a number of occasions, especially Orr, whose defence turned three double plays behind him to squelch A’s rallies.

The first of these came for Orr in the top of the first inning as the A’s had quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the strength of lead-off singles from Matt Phillips and Charlie Strandlund, a wild pitch and an RBI single from Jarrod Birch. Loglisci would then single, but Orr would get Mike Strandlund to hit into the inning ending double play.

The teams would exchange runs in the second inning, as the A’s Jared Gale would leadoff with an infield single and then score on a RBI single from Phillips and the Dodgers Connor Moughton would single and later score on an error.

The A’s 3-1 lead would disappear in the bottom of the third inning as the Dodgers would score a pair to tie things up. Jake Salter would lead things off with a single, and Bobby Scott and Kevin Pockett would walk to load the bases. Perry Wilkinson would then launch a sacrifice fly to right that would score Salter, and after the throw to the plate eluded the A’s catcher, Scott would also come in to score on the error.

After that, the two pitchers took over to dominate the middle innings, with neither team being able to generate anything in the fourth, fifth or sixth innings.
In the top of the seventh, the A’s would capitalize on a leadoff double from Matt Kittleson, as Phillips would move him to third with a sacrifice bunt and Strandlund would knock him in with a sacrifice fly to centre.

In the bottom of the inning, despite a one-out single from the Dodger’s Scott, they could not push anything else across on Loglisci, who closed it out, giving the A’s the 4-3 win.
