Kamloops, BC (ISN) – Father-son or brotherly love seems to be the main themes of the Kamloops Blazers training camp this year. There are eleven players who have bloodlines already in the WHL or NHL.
Nick Chyzowski, who was selected by the Blazers in the second round of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, is following in his father’s footsteps. Chyzowski’s father Dave played three seasons with the Blazers before playing 126 games in the NHL.
Defenseman Connor Clouston, selected by the Blazers in the third round of the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, is the son of Medicine Hat Tigers General Manager/Head Coach Shaun Clouston. The elder Clouston also played four seasons with the Portland Winterhawks in the late 1980s.
Defenseman Jaiden Focht is the son of former NHL/WHL player Dan Focht. The elder Focht played two seasons in the WHL with Tri-City and Regina before playing 82 games in the NHL from 2001-04 with Phoenix and Pittsburgh.
Defenseman Nolan Gallagher is the younger brother of former Vancouver Giants star Brendan Gallagher. Brendan, who turned 20 this year, put up 280 points over the past four seasons with the Giants. He is expected to play in the Montreal Canadiens pro system this year.
Charlie Gawlicki was selected by the Blazers in the sixth round of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. His father Jeff was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the 9th round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft.
Forward Nathan Gelsinger has joined his older brother Brayden at training camp. Brayden finished the season with the Blazers suiting up for two playoff games. The 17-year-old is in main camp while 15-year-old Nathan is here as a free agent invite.
Defenseman Connor Hamonic is the younger brother of Tri-City Americans defenseman Justin Hamonic. Connor was selected by the Blazers in the seventh round of the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft.
Blazers forward JC Lipon is joined in camp by his younger brother Mitchell. Mitchell plays Midget AAA for the Regina Pat Canadians.
Tyson McLellan is the son of former Swift Current Bronco GM/Head Coach and the current Head Coach of the San Jose Sharks, Todd McLellan. Tyson was listed by the Blazers at the conclusion of last year’s training camp.
Cameron Trott is the brother of Portland Winterhawk forward Jason Trott. Cameron is a free agent invite.
Finally, defenseman MacKenzie Ferner is attending his third Kamloops Blazers training camp. Ferner was selected by the Blazers in the eighth round of the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft. MacKenzie is the son of former Blazer and current Head Coach of the Everett Silvertips, Mark Ferner.
There are a total of 69 players in rookie camp with 28 players in main camp. Of the 28 players in main camp, 23 have either played exhibition, regular season or playoff games in the Kamloops Blazers.
Rob Trzonkowski, who was acquired from the Calgary Hitmen over the summer, skated for the first time as a Blazer today. The 18-year-old forward brings size up front as he is listed at 6’2″ and 200lbs.
