OTTAWA (CIS) – Conference play got under way on Thursday in CIS soccer, while the start of the women’s rugby regular season is set for Sunday.

In soccer, Nipissing and Laurentian have the honour of playing the first official games of the 2012 campaign as the Voyageurs host the Lakers for a women’s and men’s doubleheader tomorrow in Sudbury.

Only OUA teams are in action in Week 1, with 26 more matchups scheduled throughout Ontario from Friday to Monday. League play starts the following weekend in the AUS, RSEQ and Canada West conferences.

On the women’s side, the reigning back-to-back CIS champion Queen’s Gaels open their defence of the Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy on Saturday with a home tilt against cross-town rival RMC.

In men’s competition, reigning national champion Victoria has to wait an extra week to officially kick off its defence of the Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy. The Vikes host CIS newcomer UNBC on Sept. 7 and 8.

In women’s rugby, the RSEQ kicks things off with a pair of Labour Day weekend contests. Carleton visits Ottawa on Sunday, while Montreal – new to the league this year – travels to Quebec City on Monday to face Laval.

League action starts on Sept. 5 in OUA, Sept. 7 in AUS and Sept. 21 in Canada West. The 2011 Monilex Trophy champion Guelph Gryphons open at home against McMaster on Sept. 5.

St. Francis Xavier will host the 2012 CIS women’s rugby championship in Antigonish, N.S., from Nov. 2-4. The CIS soccer championships will follow a week later (Nov. 8-11) at Victoria (women) and Laval (men).
