Fort Saskatchewan, AB – Despite a late effort Team Red came up short on Wednesday night as Team White cruised to a 5-3 win in the Oil Kings Red/White Intrasquad game. Rookie Brett Pollock scored a natural hat trick with all three goals in the final seven minutes but it was too little to late.
Team White jumped out to an early lead as TJ Foster got things started a minute into the first. The 20-year old overager managed to get a stick on a rebound and pop the puck over rookie goaltender Derek Mazil. Red would push back but were continually turned away by 1st round WHL Bantam Draft pick Patrick Dea. Dea signed his WHL player agreement earlier in the week and posted an impressive first WHL Training Camp. Both teams amped up the physical play but white was unable to convert on several 1st period power plays. Red would hold white to a 1-0 lead going into the second.
A couple of heavyweights set the tone early in the second as Oilers draft pick Mitch Moroz took on veteran Klarc Wilson in a spirited tilt. Less than a minute later it was one of the newest Oil Kings Edgars Kulda who wheeled around in the slot and wired a shot upstairs to make it 2-0. White continued to pour it on early as rookie Darcy Zaharichuk was tripped up in the slot but still managed to roof a shot while falling to make it 3-0. Team White would add two more off the sticks of Curtis Lazar and Luke Bertolucci to take the 5-0 lead into the third.
Following the game the Oil Kings made their final set of reassignments before the preseason. 12 players were reassigned leaving the team with a group of 28 remaining for this weekend’s preseason games.
