Royals Drop Exhibition Match to Blazers

Tyler Soy records two goals in 4-2 loss

Kamloops, BC (ISN) – In a Thursday night pre-season contest at the Interior Savings Centre in Kamloops, BC, the Victoria Royals went up against the Kamloops Blazers in each team’s first pre-season game of the year, with the Blazers emerging with a 4-2 victory.

The Royals gave Patrik Polivka the start in net while the Blazers countered with Cole Cheveldave.

The first period saw the Blazers direct the majority of shots at Victoria, but Patrik Polivka stood tall in net for the Royals, stopping all 15 shots he faced as the teams played to a scoreless first 20 minutes.

Victoria found themselves in penalty trouble early in the middle frame. Kamloops’ Tim Bozon would capitalize on a two-man advantage for the Blazers at 2:43 to open the scoring. Polivka would give way to Coleman Vollrath in the Royals’ net halfway through the second period after making 21 saves. The Blazers would get a pair past Vollrath late in the second period to take a 3-0 lead into the second intermission.

Starting the third period on the power play, the Royals’ Tyler Soy found the back of the net at the 5:47 mark. Playing his first pre-season game in the WHL, Victoria’s 8th overall selection in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft beat Cheveldave to record his first pre-season goal in the WHL. Austin Carroll and Brandon Fushimi drew the assists on Soy’s marker. After consecutive delay of game penalties 46 seconds apart, the Royals successfully killed off the 5-on-3 power play with seven minutes remaining in the game. The Royals would then get a power play of their own at 16:55 and it would take 20 seconds for Tyler Soy to bury his second of the game. Zane Jones and Joe Hicketts were credited with the assists. The Blazers would add another goal at 17:35 before Victoria called a timeout. The Royals would fail to draw any closer, however, before the final buzzer. Blazers 4 Royals 2.

Victoria went 1/4 = 25.0% on the power play, while Kamloops was 1/7 = 14.3%. The Blazers outshot the Royals 44-23.

Victoria now heads to Maple Ridge for their second game of the 2012 WHL Pre-Season. The Royals will host the Blazers tomorrow night at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

The Royals will kick off their 2012-13 home schedule on September 22nd when they will host the Vancouver Giants at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Season tickets and mini-packs are now on sale.
