Everett, WA (ISN) – The Portland Winterhawks opened preseason play with a 4-3 overtime win against the Seattle Thunderbirds Friday afternoon in Everett, WA.

Rookie forward Alex Schoenborn scored the game-winner for Portland 3:05 into the extra frame to give the Hawks the victory.

The Winterhawks opened the scoring on a goal by Taylor Peters 2:07 into the game, then took a 2-0 lead when Chase De Leo scored at the 14:02 mark of the first period. Seattle got one back before the end of the frame when Justin Hickman scored a power play goal at the 18:51 mark to cut Portland’s lead to 2-1 going into the first intermission.

Seattle’s Seth Swenson tied the game with a power play goal 3:52 into the second to even the game at 2-2. The score remained tied until Hawks defenseman Josh Hanson scored a power play goal at the 15:35 mark to give Portland a 3-2 lead going into the third period.

The Thunderbirds tied it at 3-3 when Branden Troock scored at the 14:29 mark of the third, setting up overtime, where Schoenborn ended the game with his goal.

The two teams split the goaltending duties during the game. Brendan Burke made 14 saves on 16 shots for the Hawks, while Cam Lanigan came in midway through the game and proceeded to stop 13 of the 14 shots he faced.

Seattle started Brandon Glover in net, who stopped 13 of 15 Portland shots, while Danny Mumaugh came in and made 16 saves on 18 shots.

The Hawks are back in action again tomorrow in Everett when they take on the Tri-City Americans at 3 p.m., then wrap up the weekend Sunday with a 5 p.m. game against the Silvertips.
