St. Albert, AB – The Oil Kings didn’t get the start they wanted on day one of the 6th Annual Pre-season Invitational presented by Elite Sportswear and Awards. The defending WHL Champions suffered an 8-2 loss to the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday night.
Edmonton iced a very young lineup which included seven rookies and a 15 year old goaltender.
The Kings out shot the Broncos 7-1 in the first 7 minutes of the game before Brycen Martin tallied to make it 1-0 Swift Current. Edmonton then took advantage of a late first period power play as sophomore Curtis Lazar snuck a shot five hole on Bronco’s goaltender Eetu Laurikainen to tie the game. The Oil Kings were unable to take advantage of several power play opportunities despite out shooting the Broncos 18-3 in the first frame.
Bobby Zinkan tallied for Swift Current just 32 seconds into the second period to give the Broncos their second lead. The Kings would respond quickly however with a goal from newcomer Edgars Kulda. Kulda showed some good hands from in tight as he buried a backhand upstairs to tie the game 2-2.
Late in the period rookie Mitchell Walter would get tangled up with Josh Derko resulting in a hit from behind. Walter would be ejected for the hit but Derko would instigate a fight as he took on rookie Brandon Baddock in a spirited tilt. Sophomore Mason Geertsen would then follow suit as he took on the Broncos Adam Smith resulting in both player’s ejections. Swift Current tallied just minutes later to make it a 3-2 game going into the third. The Broncos would then pull away in the final period with five unanswered goals to make it an 8-2 final.
In the morning game, Prince George tallied a 6-3 win over Red Deer with Tate Olson scoring a pair of goals for the Cougars. In the afternoon match up, Carson Samoridny scored a pair to give Calgary a 3-1 win over Medicine Hat.
