Victoria, BC – The Q’s Victoria Track Series final meet of the 2012 season hosted the British Columbia 10000m provincial championships. Named the Popeye’s Supplements 10000m BC Championships the event took place Saturday, September 2nd at the University of Victoria’s Centennial Stadium at 6:30 PM.
The meet included three races two of which two were 5000m in length and were available for all abilities. The main event – the 10000m provincial championships – started at 8:00 PM. The overall winner was Kevin Friesen from Vancouver who completed the 25-lap race in 30 minutes and 39 seconds. Friesen took the lead from the gun and never relinquished it however, he was challenged early by Nanaimo’s Matt Clout and Vancouver’s Jeremiah Ziak who finished in 31:09.30 and 31:10.80. respectively. Sean Chester of Victoria ran to a new personal best time of 31:12.70 for fourth spot.
The top master runner (35-plus) originally went to two-time Olympian Bruce Deacon who finished in 32:07.40 “I was looking for sub-32:00, but that is a pretty good time and a BC 45-49 age-group record,” said Deacon who, as a representative of BC Athletics presided over the awards ceremony and handed out the medals when the race was finished. This was later changed to Jeremiah Ziak who is 36. According to Athletics Canada and BC Athletics 35-plus is the age of a master, previously masters were 40-plus.
In the women’s division Vancouver’s Natasha (Wodak) Fraser finished first in the time of 33:44.10 followed by Victoria master Marilyn Arsenault who had started the race with Fraser and stayed with her for several laps before relinquishing to second however, Arsenault did run a new personal best of 34:22.6. She is in training for the Toronto Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon that happens October 14th. Nineteen-time Canadian champion Lucy Smith of Sidney, BC finished 3rd in the women’s division and second master in 32:35.20.
The second 5000m race was won by Lehm MacGuire in 15:51.7, who led from the wire. Claire Morgan of the Prairie Inn Harriers Running Club won the women’s division and finished in 18:05.2.
The First 5000m race of the evening was won by Victoria’s Julien Marceau in 18:26.30 and the women’s race was won by Abby Spiers of Nanaimo. The fifteen-year-old won in a time of 20:43.10.
The Q’s Victoria Track Series is a multi-meet series of track meets that take place from May to September each year. Races are available for all abilities. Proceeds go to the Mustard Seed Food Bank.
