2012 AUS football season kicks off Friday night
September 6, 2012 (HALIFAX, N.S.) – On the eve of the 2012 AUS football season, Atlantic University Sport and the RSEQ are pleased to announce the renewal of their three-year inter-locking university football schedule through the 2015 season.
The current three-year agreement expires after this season and over the next three-year period, the four Atlantic University Sport football teams will once again play one interlock game each season, home or away, while each RSEQ school will play two games over the three-year agreement, one home and one away.
Match-ups will be developed on a yearly basis and as much as possible will be determined on a competitive basis using the previous season’s standings of each respective conference.
“We are extremely pleased to once again continue the football interlocking schedule with the RSEQ conference and their member schools,” said Phil Currie, Executive Director and football convener for Atlantic University Sport. “The interlock games are not only an extremely important aspect of our schedule both from a marketing and competitive standpoint, but also enhance the student-athlete experience by providing an opportunity for our respective football teams to participate in meaningful out-of-conference competition.”
Atlantic University Sport and the RSEQ conference are the only two regional associations in Canada to play inter-conference football games during the regular season where the results and statistics count.
The interlock games will continue to take place on the same weekend, normally week 2 for AUS teams and week 3 for the RSEQ squads.
“The RSEQ is pleased to partner with Atlantic University Sport to provide student-athletes with additional opportunities that they might not otherwise have,” said John Bower, director of university programs for RSEQ. “This is just one of the many ways that the RSEQ and AUS are partnering together to provide quality competitive opportunities to student-athletes.”
The two regional associations started interlock play in football beginning in the 2002 season and heading into the 2012 campaign there have been a total of 71 games played with the RSEQ teams holding a 51-20 advantage.
Of the 20 victories by AUS squads, Saint Mary’s has posted seven wins, StFX has won six games, Acadia has five wins and Mount Allison has won just two interlock match-ups.
The 2012 RSEQ regular season is already underway and the AUS football regular season kicks off tomorrow night at 7:00pm (Atlantic) with the first ever Friday night game on MacAulay Field at Mount Allison University when the StFX X-Men travel to Sackville, N.B., to face the Mounties.
