Victoria, BC (ISN) – Kevin Walz is about to set a new record as the longest playing student-athlete to compete for Camosun College as he begins his sixth year of intercollegiate athletics with the Chargers golf program.
Ironically, due to a new ruling instated by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Walz will be identified on paper as a first year player.
Prior to the new CCAA ruling, there was no limit to the number of years student-athletes were permitted to participate in golf or cross country running. However, beginning this fall, golf and cross country student-athletes will be limited to a maximum of five years eligibility, in accordance with sports such as basketball, volleyball and soccer. To promote fairness across the board, the CCAA ruled that all CCAA student-athletes returning to or joining golf or cross country running teams this fall, will be given first year eligibility status.
Walz began his intercollegiate athletic career with the Chargers in 2007. In his rookie year with the program, Walz and his Camosun teammates won the Provincial Championships and went on to earn a Silver medal at Nationals. Last season, Walz and the 2011 Chargers reclaimed the PACWEST Provincial Championship title following bronze and silver medal finishes in 2010 and 2009 respectively.
When asked if he sees himself playing a seventh year with the Chargers, Walz replied that he will pursue turning pro after graduating from Camosun’s Bachelor of Business Admin – Marketing/Communications degree program in 2013.
“I’ve had such great and memorable experiences at Camosun, but after this year I’ll be moving on,” said Walz. “My coach, John Randle, has been great at teaching me to trust myself and I feel like I’m ready to make that next step forward.”
Walz returns to the Chargers this year along with two of his 2011 Gold medal winning teammates, Jared Hundza (Pacific Christian) and Brady Stead (Vernon Secondary).
New to the 2012 squad are Kevin Bredy (Sir Winston Churchill, Calgary, AB), Jarred Callbeck (Claremont), Graham Maskiewich (Smithers Secondary) and James Um (Abbotsford Secondary).
The Chargers kick-off the 2012 season in Kamloops this weekend (Sept. 8 & 9) at the Dunes Golf Club with Thompson River University hosting the first event of the PACWEST’s four-tournament series.
