Prince George, BC – The Edmonton Oil Kings suffered their second loss of the young Western Hockey League preseason. The Cougars jumped out to a 3 nothing lead and held on for a 3 – 1 victory at the CN Centre in Prince George.
2011 first-round bantam draft pick Aaron Irving scored his first goal in Oil Kings silks to break the shutout bid with 12:29 to go in the third period. St. Albert sophomore Jake Mykitiuk scored his second of the preseason while veterans Zach Pochiro and Alex Forsberg rounded out the scoring for the Cougars.
Edmonton Oilers’ second round draft pick Mitch Moroz became the third player to wear the captain’s ‘C’ in the preseason for the Oil Kings. Edmonton’s playoff MVP Laurent Brossoit saw his first action of the preseason finishing up with 30 saves. The Oil Kings dressed a total of nine rookies including recently signed Stephen Shmoorkoff who played last season for the Sherwood Park Crusaders in the AJHL.
Edmonton’s record in the preseason is now 1 – 2. The two teams will square off again Saturday night in Prince George. The Oil Kings final tune up of the exhibition season is Friday, September 14th against the Red Deer Rebels in Lacombe, AB.
