KENNEWICK, WA (ISN) – The Portland Winterhawks continued preseason play Friday afternoon with a 5-2 win over the Kootenay Ice in a game played in Kennewick, WA.

The Hawks were dominant throughout the game, outshooting the Ice 52-24. Ty Rattie finished with a goal and three assists, while rookie Dominic Turgeon scored two third period goals to seal the win.

Portland opened the scoring 4:41 into the game on a power play goal by Taylor Peters to take a 1-0 lead, then made it 2-0 at the 13:41 mark when Oliver Bjorkstrand tipped in a Tyler Wotherspoon point shot. The Ice got back within one when Spencer Wand scored on a power play at 16:13 to cut Portland’s lead to 2-1 after 20 minutes, in a period in which the Hawks held a 17-6 advantage in shots on goal.

Portland continued applying pressure throughout the second period, outshooting the Ice 18-6 in the frame, but Kootenay tied the game at 2-2 at the 18:18 mark on a goal by Erik Benoit. It would be a short-lived tie though, as just 11 seconds before the intermission, Rattie scored to put the Hawks back on top 3-2.

Turgeon then put some distance between the Hawks and Ice when he scored twice in the third period, the second on a power play, to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead that would stand as the final.

Brendan Burke earned the win in net, going the distance and stopping 22 of the 24 shots he faced. Kootenay’s Wyatt Hoflin was kept busy by the Hawks throughout the game, as Portland fired 52 shots at him, with Hoflin making 47 saves.

Both teams were 2-4 on the power play.

The Hawks play their final preseason game tomorrow at 3 p.m. against the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kennewick. They open the regular season at home on Friday, September 21 against Seattle at 7 p.m. in the Rose Garden on a night when they will raise their 2012 Western Conference championship banner.
