Kennewick, WA- It was back and forth, but two third period goals gave the Spokane Chiefs (3-1) a 5-3 win over the Tri-City Americans (2-3) in the final game of the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament.
The first two periods were hard fought with both teams going back and forth. The Americans finally broke through on a power play towards the end of the first period with Justin Feser slapping a shot into the top left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead. The lead would not last long, as Spokane’s Connor Chartier would tie the game less than a minute later to make it 1-1 after the first.
Spokane started off the second period on a power play and converted on a goal by Mike Aviani. Tri-City would answer when Connor Rankin skated through the defense and scored to tie the game up.
The Chiefs would regain the lead again on Aviani’s second goal of the night. But the Americans would respond again, capitalizing on a Spokane penalty with a Brian Williams power play goal, tying the game at three heading into the third period.
Spokane silenced the 3,329 in attendance on a Riley Whittingham goal 1:25 into the third period. Markson Bechtold put the icing on the cake for the Chiefs, scoring about a minute later and allowing Spokane to cruise to the 5-3 victory.
The Americans will collide with Spokane again in their next pre-season game on Friday, September 14 at the Toyota Center. Tickets are $8 for general admission.
