Vancouver (ISN) – The Highlanders Peninsula Co-Op Women’s team travelled to Vancouver Sunday on the 7:00 am ferry for their first taste of action in the MWSL Premier Division, playing SurDel and coming away with a convincing 6-1 win.
It did not take long for the first goal of the season to be scored by Maryse Reichgeld. The 3rd year Vike converted a knock down from the first corner of the game taken by Liz Hansen at the 20 minute mark.
In the final minute of the first half, Hansen scored the games’ second goal on a cross by Ceilidh Glennie, making the score 2 nil at the half. Surdel came back in the game at the 52:00 minute mark catching the back line napping on a long ball over the top, which was converted on the breakaway. But a great response by the Highlanders had Mariel Solsberg tap in from close range on a cross by Hansen just 2 minutes later.
Four minutes after Solsberg hit the post and Hansen tapped in her 2nd, and then 4 minutes later Hansen netted her 3rd, again with Solsberg providing a precision cutback to the near post. To cap off her performance, Hansen provided a back-heel cross at the near post to send in Marisa Livingstone for the 16 year old’s first goal of the season, at the 75th minute. Final score was Peninsula Co-op Highlanders 6 – SurDel 1.
A solid performance for the first game of the year and Head Coach, Dave Dew said, “It was a fantastic start to the season. We were quick and attacked at every opportunity, with very strong 1 and 2 touch play. I am pleased with the performance but we need to continue to work on a number of things this week at training to prepare for next Sunday’s game against Columbus.”
The captain finished the day with 3 goals and 3 assists, leading the team to their first MWSL victory.
