Chargers golfers place second at PACWEST opener

Kamloops, BC (ISN) – The Camosun College Chargers began the 2012 PACWEST season with a second-place finish at The Dunes Golf Club in Kamloops over the weekend (Sept. 8-9).

The Chargers shot one under par on Day 1 (287), just one stroke back of first-round leaders, the UBC-Okanagan Heat. Despite a strong start on Day 2, Camosun fell away to a persistent UFV squad who battled the blustery conditions to shoot a low of 283 and capture the tournament with a total 576 strokes. The Chargers finished second with 581 followed by the VIU Mariners who shot 584.

“The guys played hard and were leading at the turn on Day 2,” said Camosun Chargers Head Coach John Randle. “The wind really came up and we struggled a little bit to finish of our rounds.”

In individual scoring, Morgan Decksheimer of VIU won the men’s title with a 36-hole total of 139 while Jen Woods of UBCO captured the women’s title with a 159 total after shooting 81 and 78.

Among the Chargers golfers, newcomer Jarred Callbeck finished tied for sixth with 145 (70-75) while teammates Jared Hundza (72-74) and Grant Maskiewich (76-70) tied for 8th with 146. Kevin Bredy made his debut with the Chargers with rounds of 73 and 75, finishing in a five-way tie for 9th place with 148.

“All in all, it was a solid start to the year,” commented Coach Randle. “The guys are looking forward to Week #2 with the feeling we will improve as the year goes on.”

The second event of the four-tournament PACWEST series will be hosted by the Kwantlen Eagles this weekend (September 14-15) at the Hazleton Golf and Country Club in Surrey, BC.
