Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Midget Spartans football team walked over the Richmond Raiders by a score of 36-0 on Saturday afternoon during week two of VMFL action at Bear Mountain Stadium.
After last weekend’s squeaker of a win against a tough Naniamo team, the midget team tightened up their chin straps and punished the visiting Raiders both on the field and the score board. With only 5 extra players on the side lines, the Raiders team ran thin as the Spartans secondary would bring the hammer down numerous times on the offense.

With a nose for the ball, the Spartans would create turnovers and punish Raider ball carriers with their aggressive tackles and spirited play. With the Spartans taking their fair share of Raider hits and both teams helping off fellow teammates, Spartans Coach Shortt was questioned about the long term health and durability of his roster. “These guys had a great off season. They worked hard in the gym. I don’t see any problems with their conditioning for the season.”

With few substitutions available for the Raiders, it seemed inevitable that it would be only a matter of time before the Spartans would wear down the depleted Richmond team.
The offensive Spartans line would stand up the Raiders defense, opening up holes for #24 Derek Morgan to run through for big gains downfield. Spartans standout QB Brett Johnston would call on Morgan and receiver #32 Lowell McDonald often, to move the Spartan yard-sticks and set up the majors with a mix of short yardage runs from the within the red zone and catch and run plays down the sidelines, tallying up the 36 point decisive win.
