September 13, 2012, KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The Okanagan Heat women’s golf team captured the team title this past weekend in Kamloops with Jen Woods (5th year, Kelowna, BC) finishing at the top of the leader board after the two-day affair.
The men’s team was unable to hold their day one two stroke lead and finished up fourth. Cody Bell (2nd year, Salmon Arm, BC) was the Heat’s top golfer at four shots off the pace with a two-day 143.
Day 2’s windy conditions affected a few of the UBC Okanagan men’s team with three of the five golfing in Kamloops adding 5-7 strokes from Saturday to Sunday.
“Day 1 we had three very good scores a pretty good one and an average one, while on Day 2 three of the players added strokes,” explained the Heat’s new coach Mike Darnbrough after his first tournament. “Will Deck (3rd year, Kelowna, BC) shot another 74 and Talon Moore (1st year, Vancouver, BC) shot another 78. We did not play poorly, but three teams, especially UFV, played exceptionally well. It was very windy, which affected a few of our players.”
Darnbrough thought that Woods played like a veteran able to battle the elements and shoot better on Sunday than she did on Saturday to capture the first tournament of the season. It is the seventh of her career.
“Jen Woods played very solid golf on Day 2 after a tougher first day. She settled right down and was able to handle the more difficult conditions on Day 2 very well. Her focused approach certainly paid off.”
This weekend the team will play at the Hazelmere golf club in South Surrey, B.C., as Kwantlen Polytechnic University will host the second PACWEST tournament of the year. The two-day tournament will run Saturday and Sunday the 15-16 of September.
