September 15, 2012, VICTORIA, B.C. (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s field hockey team opened their season up on the road taking three points from the Calgary Dinos on Sept. 15 at Hawkings Field. The Vikes converted three times to defeat the Dinos 3-1.
The Vikes, with eleven rookies, got on the board first in the 18th minute when Kyla Kirby (Victoria, BC) converted a penalty stroke against Dinos keeper Sydney Hamm. The goal would stand as the lone marker entering the half.
The Dinos graduated three CIS All-Canadians from last year’s roster and looked to fifth-year Carolina Romeo, who converted on a penalty corner in the 47th minute to tie the game at one.
The Vikes responded when Kayleen van der Ree (Courtenay, BC) scored on a field goal attempt in the 54th minute and Victoria’s Rosie Beale converted on a penalty corner in the 58th minute.
The two-goal lead was enough to give the Vikes their first three points of their Canada West campaign.
The Vikes will take on the Dinos tomorrow, Sept. 16, at 12 p.m. PST.
