September 16, 2012, Nanaimo, BC (ISN) – The Nanaimo Clippers peppered Powell River Kings goalie Jonah Imoo with 45 shots and beat him three times in a span of 3:24 in the final frame to claim a 3-1 home win on Saturday evening in Nanaimo.

The Nanaimo Clippers kicked off their 40th Season with a bang, earning a 3-1 win over the Powell River Kings. The 1200 fans were caught off guard when the fireworks started and from there it was a spectacular show. Each Clipper player skated through fire while entering the ice, and part of the 1972 Clipper team was in attendance.

The first period was nothing like the beginning of the game; not a lot of action from both sides. Kyle Kramer was ejected out of the game for a hit from behind.

In the second, penalties were flying everywhere, David Iacono got a game misconduct for a blow to head, Clippers Rygus got a game misconduct, 5 minute for fighting and 2 minutes for a blow to the head, the Kings Scarth got game misconduct, 5 minutes for fighting and 2 minutes for instigating. In total 26 minutes of penalties were handed out in the period. During all that, the Kings were able to get on the board, a power play goal by Matt Joyaux from Luke Nogard and Evan Richardson.

In the third period, it was more of the same, Chris Newton got ejected early into the third with a blow to the head, and 27 more minutes of penalties were given out. However this period was a lot different for the Clippers. Early into the third period Nanaimo’s Brendan Taylor got the Clippers on the board, followed shortly after by a goal by Golton Dahlen, and then less than 5 minutes later, another Clippers goal by Brendan Forbes.

Nanaimo’s third period boost gave them the edge in this game, 3-1 was the final score. 3 stars of the game without a doubt, 3rd star was Nanaimo’s Brendan Forbes, 2nd Star was the Kings goaltender Jonah Imoo and 1st Star from the Clippers, goaltender Jayson Argue.

The Clippers are on the road this week taking on the Cowichan Valley Capitals this Friday, then they are back home on the 28th to take on the Victoria Grizzlies.
