September 17, 2012, EVERETT – The Everett Silvertips today announced a trade that will bring 1993-born goaltender Cole Holowenko to Everett from the Prince Albert Raiders in exchange for defenseman Evan Morden and goaltender Andy Desautels.
Holowenko, 19, was Prince Albert’s number-one goaltender for most of last season, appearing in 47 games as a WHL rookie. Both his 1,260 saves and 2,335 minutes played ranked in the league’s top 20. The Penticton, BC native was among the most successful shootout goaltenders in the WHL, stopping 70% of the attempts he faced (14 saves on 20 shots) to post a 4-1 shootout record. Holowenko finished 2011-12 with a win-loss record of 13-26-1-1, two shutouts, a 3.98 goals-against average and an .890 saves percentage.
“In Cole we have acquired a goaltender that has a full year of experience in our league, and we hope that he and Austin Lotz will be a solid tandem to carry us forward into the season,” said General Manager Garry Davidson. “Hopefully this will give Andy an opportunity to establish himself and Evan a chance to continue his growth, because he has been a positive member of our program for the last two years. With some of our additions on defense, we just didn’t feel that we’d be able to afford Evan enough playing time as a 19-year-old.”
Morden, 19, departs the Silvertips after playing 108 regular season games and eight playoff contests for the club over the past two seasons. He compiled career totals of 11 points (4g/7a), 90 penalty minutes and a -22 rating in that time. A native of Swan River, Manitoba, Morden was selected by Everett in the seventh round (141st overall) of the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft.
Desautels, 18, was selected in the fifth round (95th overall) of the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft. He has dressed in a back-up goaltending role numerous times over the past two seasons, appearing in one career game at Vancouver on March 20, 2011. From White City Saskatchewan, Desautels spent most of last season with the Flin Flon Bombers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
The Silvertips are currently preparing to open the 2012-13 WHL regular season Saturday night at 7:05 pm in front of their home fans at Comcast Arena. The ‘Tips will drop the puck on their 10th Anniversary season against the Prince George Cougars – the same team they faced in their inaugural home game in 2003.
