September 17, 2012, VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s field hockey team is on track for their 2012 campaign towards a qualifying spot at the Toronto-hosted CIS National Championship after defeating the Calgary Dinos 1-0 in the second game of their double-header opening weekend on Sept. 16 at Hawkings Field.
The lone goal scorer for the Vikes came on a peanlty corner in the 49th minute from Claremont graduate Annie Walters-Shumka (Victoria, B.C.).
The game remained scoreless after the first 35 minutes with Dinos keeper Sydney Hamm and Vikes keeper Sheriden Goodmanson (Victoria, BC) doing their part between the posts.
Goodmanson records her first season shut out as a Vike, while Walters-Shumka gets her first goal of the regular season after scoring twice during the pre-season matches against Dartmouth College and Brown Univiversity.
The Sunday victory follows a 3-1 triumph on Saturday in the season opener for both teams, giving the rookie-laden Vikes a six point head start into the season. With the loss of the Alberta Pandas in the Canada West conference, the three-team battle leaves one team with a bye each weekend.
The Vikes will return home to re-group and compete in the Vancouver Premier League before hosting the UBC Thunderbirds during their 50th Anniversary Homecoming weekend celebrations, Sept. 29-30. Both games will take place at 11 a.m. at the UVic field hockey turf.
