September 18, 2012, Vancouver (ISN) – A last second touchdown pass from Ashton MacKinnon to Ross Faulkner gave the Mount Doug Rams a thrilling 44-40 win over Terry Fox in pre-season high school football action last Friday.
The Rams captured the victory on a TD with 12 seconds to go in the game, 4th down on the Fox 3 yard line trailing 40 to 37. Electing to go for the win, Rams QB Ashton MacKinnnon passed to grade 10 player Ross Faulkner in the back of the end zone for the win.
The game itself was s good old fashion offensive shootout. Terry Fox took an early 12 to 0 lead in the 1st quarter. The Rams cut the lead to 12 to 6 on a 30 TD pass from Ashton MacKinnon to Marcus Davis.
Terry Fox went up 20 to 6, before the Rams struck again with a 25 yard pass via the MacKinnon – Davis combination to make it a 20 to 13 game. Terry Fox responded once again to go up 27 to 13.
The Rams replied before the end of the half with a 30 yard run by Julian Luis to close the gap to 27 to 20. In the 3rd quarter, Mount Douglas tied the game at 27 to 27 on a 40 yard pass from Ashton MacKinnon to Ross Faulkner and the 3rd quarter ended in a deadlock.
The Rams took their 1st lead in the 4th quarter when Ashton threw a 22 yard TD strike to Marcus, and the Rams were up 34 to 27. Terry Fox came back and tied the game at 34 to 34.
Callum Duke nailed a 36 yard field goal to put the Rams ahead again 37 to 34. But the pesky Terry Fox team struck again with a touchdown to pull ahead 40 to 37. The Rams started their “drive” with under 5 minutes to go and ultimately drove to the Terry Fox 3 yard line setting up the play of game with 12 seconds as Ashton MacKinnon found Ross Faulkner in the back of the end zone for the winning TD.
Fox had 2 final plays but the Rams hung on for a thrilling back and forth win. Congratulations to all the Varsity players for their perseverance and resiliency in the face of adversity this past week…and thanks to all the JV players for their support during the contest.
Ashton MacKinnon was 20 for 27 for 246 yards and 5 TDs. Marcus Davis had an amazing 312 all purpose yards (rushing, receiving, kickoff returns) and 3 TD’s. Julian Luis was the leading rusher with 107 yards on only 9 carries, and 1 TD. Ross Faulkner had 3 receptions for 51 yards and 2 huge TD’s. Sasha Shurvin was the leading tackler for the Rams with 7 tackles, followed by Julian Luis (4), Sean Waugh (4), Trevor Ridley (3), Alec Wong (3), Marcus Davis (2), Ryan Yeske (2), Sheldon Mack (2), Christian Krause (2) and Zach Wilkinson (2).
The Varsity Rams now have a well deserved bye while the Junior Rams square off against Seaquam this Saturday September 22nd at 1:00 at Mount Douglas. We are encouraging all Ram Parents and Fans to wear PURPLE for the JV game and cheer them onto victory this weekend.
