September 19, 2012, Kelowna, BC (ISN) – Greg Poitras, the head coach of the UBC Okanagan men’s volleyball team, has proclaimed this pre-season the toughest exhibition schedule he has ever had his team play in the eight years he has been at the helm of the Heat.

The challenging schedule gets started right away as the men’s volleyball team will start its season with some international flair, hosting the Argentinean U23 men’s national team for a pair of matches at UBC’s Okanagan campus Sep 21-22. The high-flying action will get underway Friday night at 8 p.m., and both teams will play an encore match Saturday at 7 p.m.

Team Argentina will be in Kelowna this weekend and is on route to the U23 Pan America Cup being held in Langley, BC from Sept 25-30. Argentina has placed among the top three in the world in the recent past in this age category. A large number of their players play professional volleyball in South America.

“This will be a very exciting matchup for all involved,” Poitras puts in. “Not everybody playing volleyball, even at the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) level, get the chance to play in an international event of this magnitude. Even though it is early in the year for the team I think all those in attendance will be witness to some great athletes playing a very high level of volleyball. It is a real treat to have this opportunity.”

In a warm-up to the Argentinean exhibition, the Heat just finished a match versus the two time CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) national champions the Trinity Western Spartans. This game took place at Kelowna Secondary with the Heat falling to Trinity in three sets (25-16, 25-13, 25-17) on Wednesday, Sep 19.

The Spartans welcome back four starters to the 2012/13 lineup and also boast four newcomers, including three freshmen and one 4th-year as the team gears up for a third straight title.

The Heat enjoyed a very successful first year in Canada West and posted a 12-23 overall record, while in league play they finished seventh in the Canada West with an 8-12 record and advanced to the Canada West Quarterfinals.

UBC Okanagan continues its exhibition season with a solo match versus Thompson Rivers in Kamloops on Wednesday, Sep 26 at 7 p.m.

The Heat has three matches scheduled on the Thanksgiving Weekend. On Thursday, Oct 4 the squad takes on Fudan University from China at the War Memorial Gym at 7p.m. in Vancouver. The next evening, Friday, the Heat square off against the UBC Thunderbirds at Vancouver Technical High School at 6:30p.m. UBC Okanagan will finish the three game series on Saturday night when they have a rematch against Trinity Western at the LEC in Langley at 7:30 p.m.
