Varsity Blues’ Jewett wins Western International

LONDON, Ont. – 2011 OUA female runner of the year Tamara Jewettopened the season with a bang on Saturday, winning thewomen’s title at the 38th annual WesternInternational at Thames Valley Golf Course in London, Ont.

Jewett (Toronto) dominated the 5km race, finishing in 17:39, afull six seconds ahead of McMaster’s Lindsay Carson(17:45).

Rookie runner Kelly Hennessy was the next Varsity Blue to crossthe finish line, placing 13th with a time of 18:31. Hersister, Colleen was not far behind, finishing 22ndoverall in a time of 18:55. Erin Ready (19:43) and Rosa Serafini(19:51) also placed among the top 50 runners, helping U ofT’s women to a fifth place finish.

Toronto’s men placed eighth overall and were led byfourth-year veteran Ethan Davenport. The Aurora, Ont., native wasthe 13th runner to cross the 8km finish line, in a timeof 26:05.

Gavin Hamilton finished 25th in a time of 26:24,while Alex Belluzzo (26:35), Zain Ahmed (26:59) and Jake Woloshyn(27:57) also raced for the Blues.
