September 23, 2012, Saskatoon (ISN) – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies Men’s soccer team extended their undefeated streak to four matches after a 1-0 shutout of the visiting MountRoyal University Cougars Saturday on Field 7 in Saskatoon’s PotashCorp Park.
With the victory Saskatchewan moves to 3-0-1 on the season. It was the third straight 1-0 win for the Huskies. Mount Royal is still in search of their first win of the season at 0-5.
Mount Royal keeper David Thalheimer stole the show for the Cougars recording eight saves in the loss. His strong play kept the match close. The Huskies took 24 shots in the game, while the Cougars took seven. Huskie veteran keeper Mark Diakiw made two saves at the other end of the pitch.
Just before half time, the Huskies finally broke the scoreless drought. Brett Levis won a free kick for the Huskies after being hauled down at midfield. His bail sailed onto the head of defender Sam Mylymok and past Thalheimer in the 45th minute.
The best chance for the Cougars in the game came in the 80th minute when Jan Barbier took a foul to give the Huskies a free kick 20 yards out. Cody Cook’s shot sailed just wide of the Huskies’ net.
The two teams will meet again Sunday on Field 7 in PotashCorp Park. Kickoff is 2:15 p.m.
