September 23, 2012, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Vancouver Northwest Giants made it two in a row with a 5-2 win over the South Island Royals in BC Hockey Major Midget League action Sunday morning.
The Royals gave Markus Daly the nod in goal, while the Giants went with Chris Clokie.
Vancouver opened the game with an early man advantage and looked to capitalize. Forward Jansen Harkins received a cross crease pass in the right circle and fired a quick shot on goal, but Daly slid across to make the nice right pad stop. The Giants continued to hold the play for the first half of the frame, but the South Island netminder held his crease after he made several high quality saves. Daly’s play would pay off as the Royals opened the scoring with less than five minutes to go in the first. From the left corner, forward Brandon Tutte centered a puck for Ethan Waitzner who tapped it past the Vancouver goaltender. South Island would take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Giants tied the game up at one on a power play marker at the five minute mark. Forward Eric Mango corralled a puck in the right corner before he walked out in front of goal and slid it past Daly. Vancouver then took the lead less than two minutes later after a point shot deflected off a South Island player and found the stick of Quinn Thompson in the left circle. The Giants’ winger quickly released a shot before the South Island keeper could get his glove on it. The Royals’ responded at the halfway point of the frame after Ryan Kelm jumped on a rebound in the slot from Cam MacKay’s initial shot from the right faceoff dot. Vancouver replied late in the frame with two powerplay goals. The first came off the stick of Brandon Del Grosso in the right circle, while the second was scored by Sam Currleigh in the slot on a two-man advantage. After 40 minutes of play the Giants held a 4-2 lead.
The first 10 minutes of the final period saw both team’s exchange chances as both netminders were called on to make some key stops. With eight minutes left to play, the Giants’ broke out on a two-on-one. From the left side, Currleigh fed a cross-crease pass to Del Grosso, but Daly slid across to make the save and eat up the rebound. With less than two minutes to play, South Island pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker, but Currleigh would add the empty netter to insure the win. Vancouver 5 South Island 2
