September 24, 2012, Nanaimo, BC (ISN) – The VIU Mariners Men’s Soccer Team got a much needed 6 points, with shut out wins over UBCO Heat (3-0) and TRU Wolfpack (2-0) this past weekend.

Saturday it was Drissa Bouare opening the scoring early on a cross from Romaie Martin, Bouare controlled the cross in close and buried the ball in the net.

Solid defence from veteran players, Matt Mehrassa, Ben Leggett and Dan Cato they helped hold the backline while Chris Merriman and Davis Stupich made runs up and down the park.

Sunday the Mariners played a very physical but hard working TRU Wolfpack and came away with a 2-0 win.

It is always interesting when these two teams meet and this weekend was no different, the Mariners scored early in the 2nd half on a penalty shot after Drissa Bouare was taken down in the box. Stephen Ewashko stepped up to score his 2nd goal of the year. Then midway into the 2nd it was Bouare who scored one of his own (3rd of the year), a header of a great cross by Jordan Degraff.

Ben Leggett was selected player of the game for his hard work in the center of the backline, battling against the Wolf pack attackers, both Leggett and Dan Cato had to be strong against the physically strong players the Wolfpack have up top. Davis Stupich and Chris Merriman played their game on the outsides, making things tuff for the Wolfpack to get anything going on the outsides.

Robbie Cochrane finished the weekend with 2 shutouts for the Mariners continuing to show why he is one of the top keepers in the league with the best goals against record.

“I was very pleased to see how our players were able to adapt to 2 very different styles of play in one weekend,” noted Head Coach Bill Merrimen.  “Both teams came in wanting and needing three points but we were able to play some good soccer and get the 6 points. The players all know how the league standings can turn upside down in one weekend and have to stay focused”
