September 25, 2012, VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men’s and women’s basketball teams will host alumni squads in exhibition format on Friday as part of the University of Victoria’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. The women’s game will tip off at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the men at 8 p.m.

At half time of the men’s game, former women’s basketball playerJanet McLachlan will lead a five-on-five wheelchair basketball demo.

The alumni women’s side will see return from 1996-2001 team mates and national champions Kim Johnson and Lindsay Brooke. Johnson leads the Vikes in all-time three-pointers made with 93 in 91 games, while Brooke is fourth all time in three-pointers made with 79 in 101 games.

Also suiting up for the alumni is Carmen Lapthorne, who initially competed for the Camosun Chargers before transferring to play two season with the Vikes women. Lapthorne competed from 2009-2011 and was a regular starter for the Vikes putting up a scoring average of 10.1 points-per-game.

Also competing for the Vikes women will be McLachlan, who is Canada’s top scorer for the wheelchair basketball team and prior to a knee injury, competed for the Vikes that won CIAU national championships in 1998 and 2000.

For the men, several familiar faces will return to their home court including CIS All-Canadians Chris Trumpy and Eric Hinrichsen. Trumpy was named Canada West Rookie of the Year in 2000 and went on to become the Vikes’ fourth-highest leader in scoring with 1361 points in 102 games played. Recently inducted into the UVic Sports Hall of Fame, Hinrichsen was a three-time CIS All-Canadian, two-time CIS Player of the Year and was also named the Championship MVP in 1996.

Several other familiar names will be sporting the blue and gold for the alumni men including Vikes stand outs Rob Kinnear, Brandon Ellis and Tyler Haas from the 2000’s. Recently graduated point guard Zac Andrus will also be competing. As well, running the bench will be coach Ian Hyde-Lay, who started coaching with the Vikes in 2004-05 and was a high school coach to the NBA’s Steve Nash at St. Michael’s University School.

Tickets for the game will be sold at the door and are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, other students and alumni, $5 for children (age 7-14) or UVic students and recreation members. Children under the age of 6 are free. For more information visit: govikesgo.com/tickets
