September 26, 2012, Langley, BC – Argentina opened the Men’s U23 Pan American Cup with a victory over Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17).
Luis David Adames was the top scorer for Dominican Republic, with 24 points, while Gonzalo Lapera tallied 20, with three blocks and one ace for Argentina.
“I feel glad after playing a good match on our side,” said Argentina captain Gonzalo Quiroga. “It is always great to begin with a victory and that gives us confidence when starting this cup.”
Dominican captain Wilfrido Hernandez said: “The match was quite good. We could win, but failed in the reception, that is a fundamental key and that is what we have to adjust. We need to play hard to keep fighting now that we are just beginning at the tournament.”
For Argentina’s coach, Fabian Muraco: “This match was difficult, but the victory so important. Our team is young but has a lot of potential, maybe we don’t have a big name, but we have to play as a group so we can compensate for it”.
The coach of Dominican Republic, Osiel Vázquez stated: “We made a lot of technical mistakes. The boys were a little tired in the match and we hope to play at our best level for the next one.”
Both teams are back in action Wednesday with Argentina playing its next game against Mexico at 6 p.m. while Dominican Republic will play Brazil at 8 p.m.
