September 27, 2012, VICTORIA, B.C. – This weekend the University of Victoria Vikes women’s rugby team is taking on the University of Alberta Pandas on Sept. 28, 5:00p.m. at Wallace Field. The Vikes currently hold a record of 0-2 while the Pandas arrive in Victoria having not yet played a Canada West game this season.
Last weekend the Vikes opened their Canada West season at home with games against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns and the University of Calgary Dinos. Dropping both results 49-5 and 47-3 respectively, the rookie-laden UVic women will look to this weekend as an opportunity to put some more points on the board.
Despite their winless record, several Vikes have put up strong performances in their last two games. Rookie Laura Crowe-Hutchon (West Vancouver, BC) has been playing well defensively while fellow first-year Dacey Livingstone (Red Deer, AB) has generated some good opportunities down the wing, scoring the only try of the Vikes season thus far. Veterans Melissa Robinson (North Vancouver, BC) and Abby Goodwin (Charlottetown, PEI) have also worked hard to force several key turnovers.
The University of Alberta Pandas are Canada West tournament hosts this year, giving the team an automatic berth to the competition that will decide who moves on to the CIS National Championship in Nova Scotia in November. The team boasts four 2011 Canada West All-Stars, Carmen Hobbs, Louise Chavarie, Chelsea Guthrie, and Alanna Fittes, as well as several other standout returnees that will be a challenge for the young Vikes.
The match-up between the University of Victoria Vikes and the University of Alberta Pandas kicks off at 5:00 p.m. on Sept. 28 at Wallace Field in Victoria.
