Cougars Sneak Past T-Birds

September 28, 2012, PRINCE GEORGE, BC – The Prince George Cougars defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-3 Friday night at the CN Centre in Prince George.

This was the first of back-to-back games between the T-Birds and Cougars. They will meet again on Saturday night at 7pm at CN Centre.

Prince George (3-0-0-0) took a 1-0 lead on a penalty shot goal by Colin Jacobs at 15:48 of the first period.

Seattle (1-2-0-0) came right back and tied the game 1-1 at 16:34 of the first on a goal from Branden Troock. Defenseman Jerret Smith got the puck to Luke Lockhart. Lockhart dropped the puck for Troock in the slot and he snapped it past Prince George goalie Devon Fordyce.

The T-Birds went in front 2-1 less than a minute after their first goal. Connor Sanvido made a cross slot pass to Hickman who swept the puck past Fordyce. Roberts Lipsbergs had the second assist on Hickman’s first goal of the season.

Both teams had 12 shots on goal in the first period.

Evan Wardley gave the T-Birds a 3-1 lead at 9:04 of the second period on his first career WHL goal. Wardley got to a loose puck at the center ice red line near the right boards. Wardley shot the puck into the Cougars zone towards Fordyce. The puck bounced towards the Fordyce. The Prince George goalie misplayed the puck and Wardley’s shot found the back of the net.

The Cougars scored three goals in 2:59 late in the second period to take a 4-3 lead. Jordan Tkatch scored at 14:46, Alex Forsberg got the tying goal at 15:39 and Dalton Siwak put the Cougars in front with a power-play goal at 17:45 of the period.

Prince George led 24-20 in shots after two periods.

Seattle outshot Prince George 33-29 in the game.

Justin Myles made his first career start WHL start for the T-Birds. Myles stopped 25 of 29 shots and his record is now 0-1-0-0.

Fordyce stopped 30 of 33 shots to get the win and his record is 1-0-0-0.
