Vees Shutout Powell River in Home Opener

September 30, 2012, Penticton, BC – The Penticton Vees kicked-off their home schedule in style, with a 4-0 blanking of the Powell River Kings Saturday. The win is the Vees third in a row and fourth in their last five games.

After a dazzling pre-game ceremony that included the raising of the 2012 RBC Cup banner, the Vees went to work in the opening period. Louie Nanne opened the scoring on a deflection in front of the Kings net. Wade Murphy took the shot but it was Nanne’s stick redirecting the rubber past Jonah Imoo at 5:10; Nanne’s first BCHL goal.

The Nanne marker was the only goal of the first despite the Vees outshooting the Kings 13-5. Kings netminder Jonah Imoo was tested throughout the period but thwarted the Vees attack, time and again.

The Vees broke through in a short span in the middle period, scoring two goals in 25 seconds to add to their lead. The first from Travis Blanleil, who like Nanne, tipped a point-shot over the glove of Imoo at 7:50. Bryan Sinz, who assisted on Blanleil’s goal, scored his own just 15 seconds later. Sinz let go a seeing-eye wrist-shot from the blue-line, which beat Imoo over the glove at 8:15; two goals in mere seconds.

In the third the Vees padded their lead with a late power-play marker from Blanleil. Nanne was stopped on the blocker side but Blanleil followed up by shoveling the puck past a downed Kings goaltender at 19:07; Blanleil’s second goal of the game and season.

Vees Notes:

Chad Katunar didn’t have a heavy workload but made several key saves, in a 16-save shutout performance; his second clean sheet in three games. Wade Murphy led all scorers with three assists; Blanleil and Nanne each finished with a goal and an assist.

The win was the Vees sixth on the season, which pushes their lead atop of the Interior division to five points over Merritt, who were facing Prince George Saturday; game was still ongoing by press time.

Next up for the Vees is a Sunday afternoon encounter with the Prince George Spruce Kings, tomorrow, September 30th at the SOEC. The Spruce Kings handed the Vees their only regulation loss, back on September 15th.Tickets are available at the Valley First box office at the SOEC, or online at
