September 28, 2012, Victoria, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s rugby team had another tough day at Wallace Field against the number two-ranked University of Alberta Pandas. With a loss of 48-0 the Vikes drop to a record of 0-3-0 while the Pandas kick-off their Canada West season with a win.
On the board early, the Pandas took quick advantage of the Vikes’ inexperienced roster and were able to exploit several of the UVic women’s tactical errors. Tries by veteran forward Miranda Monty, captain Chelsea Guthrie, and experienced flyhalf Allison Fairbairn, proved that the Pandas had the advantage with their roster of returning players. Rookies Paige Farries and Amy Speers also posted five-pointers while Oregan State University transfer Amee Svatos also crossed the try line. Second-year Maya Hiller earned two tries while Teanna Chase made good on four conversions.

The Vikes were unable to capitalize on opportunity and struggled to keep up with the Pandas tactically. Fourth-year scrumhalf Kehla Guimond (Sidney, BC) played a strong game for the home team while captain Melissa Robinson (North Vancouver, BC) also put up a good performance. Unfortunately fifth-year prop Chelsey Minter (Sidney, BC) has been sidelined due to injury and would have been a welcome boost to the young Vikes’ roster.

The University of Alberta Pandas are now 1-0-0 in the Canada West conference while the Vikes are at 0-3-0. Next up for the Pandas is a trip to Vancouver to take on the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Sept. 30 at 1:00 p.m. The Vikes have a two-week break before they play the Thunderbirds at the University of British Columbia on Oct. 13 at 4:00 p.m.
