September 30, 2012, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The defending Provincial Champion Mout Doug Rams opened their 2012 BC High School AAA Varsity football season in impressive fashion last Friday as they defeated the St. Thomas More Knights 41-26 at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria.
On a perfect evening at Royal Athletic Park for Friday Night Lights, the Varsity Rams played their Conference and Home Opener against traditional mainland powerhouse St. Thomas More Collegiate.

The Rams jumped to an early 14 to 0 lead en route to a 41 to 26 victory, and a terrific start to regular season play after going 3 and 0 in exhibition games. Mason Swift and Julian Luis led the scoring for Mount Douglas with 2 touchdowns each, including a pick six in each half. Brian Dowds caught a long 50 yard TD strike from Ashton MacKinnon for the Rams other major. Callum Duke was again perfect on the night hitting field goals of 21 and 34 yards and kicking 5 of 5 converts.

In the game, the Rams rushed as a team for 148 yards with Julian Luis leading the way with 56 yards on only 7 carries, followed by 39 yards from MJ Gabas and 36 from Marcus Davis. Ashton MacKinnon continued his strong play with 149 yards passing and 2 touchdowns. The Rams Offensive Line played another strong game providing great time for Ashton to throw.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Rams played their best game forcing 5 turnovers including 4 interceptions. Julian Luis had a monster game with 2 interceptions and leading the team in tackles with 9. Mason Swift and Marcus Davis had the other picks. The Rams welcomed back Mitch Pearse who tied with Mason Swift for 2nd in tackles with 7 each, followed by Sean Waugh, MJ Gabas, Trevor Ridley and Zack Wilkinson. Zach also receives “The Wolf of the Week” for the first turnover of the game.

The Rams next face mainland rival Vancouver College, who are coming off a 49 to 20 victory over Centennial. Game time is again this Friday at 5:00 pm at Royal Athletic Park and yes, will once again be a “BLACKOUT FRIDAY”. The Junior Varsity Rams clash with Vancouver College earlier in the day at 2:30 pm at RAP.
