October 3, 2012, VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team will play host to CIS competition in the Bishop’s University Gaiters on Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. in McKinnon Gym.

This will be the Vikes’ third exhibition game after hosting Eastern Washington on Sept. 9 and the annual alumni basketball game on Sept. 29.

In preparation for the start of their Canada West season on Nov. 2-3, the Vikes men will be looking to capitalize on exhibition opportunity as the team graduated three starters from last season. In this year’s line up, head coach Craig Beaucamp will be looking for leadership from seniors Michael Acheampong and Pierce Anderson, as well as fourth years Ryan Erikson, Terrell Evans and Brandon Dunlop.

“We are at that time of the season where we just want to get a little bit better each time we get out on the court,” said Beaucamp. “It will be nice to play a real game against a CIS opponent. Bishop’s will be really solid since several of their players are back for this year.”

The Gaiters return a core of 11 players and all five starters from the 2011-12 season. The Gaiters boast senior forward Tim Hunter, who was named a 2011-12 RSEQ all-star and led the team in scoring and rebounding. Mukiya Post, from Victoria, will also be expected to get the Gaiter’s on the board as he averaged 11.3 points-per-game in league play last season. Bishop’s also boast talent in fourth-year wing Jeremy Leonard-Smith, six-foot-ten center Mike Andrews, as well as fourth-year guard Onnex Blackwood.

The Vikes and Gaiters will tip off at 6 p.m. PST in McKinnon Gym on Ken and Kathy Shields Court on Oct. 4. The game will be broadcast live at

The Vikes Canada West basketball season will begin on Friday, Nov. 2 with the women’s game taking place at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m.
