October 7, 2012, LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western men’s hockey team never quit, rallying from deficits on several occasions, but ultimately its final comeback effort came up short as the Spartans fell 8-6 to Thompson Rivers Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

Trailing 6-3 early in the third period, the Spartans scored two goals in a 16-second span to close the gap to within one, but despite more than 14 minutes left in the period were unable to complete the comeback against a speedy and skilled WolfPack squad.

Thompson Rivers, never trailing throughout the game, was led by Jarrett Martin, who had two goals and one assist, Colten DeFrias, who had two goals and John Bokla, who had a goal and two assists. Also scoring for the WolfPack was Rigby Burgart, Taylor Stuart and Lucas Daoust.

WolfPack goalie Shane Mainprize stopped 21 of 27 shots he faced in the win.

The Spartans were paced by Jamey Kreller (Winfield, B.C.), who had two goals and an assist, Jamie Russell (Surrey, B.C.), who had two goals, and Matt Chaput (Seaforth, Ont.), who added two assists. The other Spartans goals were scored by Trevor Beaupre (New Westminster, B.C.) and Doug Gordon (Ottawa).

Tim Zwiers (Williams Lake, B.C.) stopped 14 of 19 shots before he was pulled in the second period in favour of Harry Fredeman (Ladner, B.C.), who stopped 13 of the 16 shots he faced in the loss.

The Spartans are now 0-2 on the season, while TRU is 1-0.

“We scored some goals and we should be able to win when we score six goals,” said Spartans coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. “That’s a positive we can pull away. We took undisciplined penalties and these weren’t the type of penalties that can help you win games. They were penalties that put us down a man at the wrong times.

“The guys fought back three times. There were a lot of positives but coming up short isn’t one of them.”

Despite a back-and-forth first period, the Spartans found themselves down 1-0 at the first intermission after a goal from Burgart opened the scoring at 13:37.

In the second period, the WolfPack exploded for three goals – from Stuart, DeFrias and Martin – in the first six minutes to open a 4-0 lead.

However, TWU’s Kreller responded with a pair of goals to make it 4-2 with less than five minutes left in the frame. The teams then traded goals, Martin scoring for TRU and Russell for TWU, to send the Spartans into the dressing room down 5-3.

After a DeFrias marker made it 6-3 early in the third period, the Spartans got two quick goals, from Russell and Gordon, to make it a game.

But with a lack of discipline killing the Spartans – they took 40 minutes in penalties in the third period – they were unable to complete the comeback.

Thompson Rivers got goals from Bokla and Daoust sandwiched around Beaupre’s tally as the WolfPack earned the win in its first game of the season.

The Spartans are back in action Oct. 12-13 when they play Selkirk Friday and Eastern Washington Saturday on the road. The WolfPack are back on the ice Oct. 12 at home against Victoria.
