Chargers Volleyball Earn Split With VIU

October 12, 2012, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Camosun College Chargers volleyball teams completed tonight’s season openers with a split, with the women losing a hard fought battle to the defending CCAA National Champion Mariners squad and the men taking down the 2011-12 PACWEST Silver Medalists in three straight sets.

The Chargers women put forth a great effort against the Vancouver Island Mariners and kept the pace in all three sets. In the first, the Chargers came out with a fast lead over the Mariners posting several leads until the two teams tied at 16-all. VIU roared back with a six-point run and from that point, resumed control closing the set at 25-18. The Mariners led all the way in set number two, despite a great effort by the Chargers mid-set as the home team narrowed the gap to 25-20 after trailing by 9 points at 19-10. The third set saw VIU take a 7-1 lead before the home team jumped into the game and tied the score at 8-all. From there, it was a see-saw battle with the Mariners holding the Chargers at 21 until they earned the win.

Women’s Final Score

VIU 3 – 0 Camosun 
(25-18, 25-20, 25-21)

Second-year middle Morgan Marshall from Smithers, BC led the Chargers with 6 kills, 2 aces and 2 digs. Third-year left side Hilary Graham (Courtenay) posted 7 kills and 4 digs

The Chargers men were slow to start, giving the Mariners an 8 point lead at the beginning of the first set. By mid-set, Camosun bounced back to close the gap and post a 19-17 lead. From there, the Chargers held the lead to in a tight set that went 25-23. In the second, the Mariners were able to turn a five point deficit into a tie game at 8 points apiece but Camosun came back to gain control, taking the set to 22-16 and winning 25-20. The Chargers dominated in the third leading at one point 18-10 and completing the match with a 25-20 win.
