Story by Christian J. Stewart (ISN)

October 13, 2012, Victoria, BC – Local author Randall James has just authored a children’s book titled “The STRIKERZ,” a youth soccer related sports tale that stars Victoria youth soccer players as the “characters” in the story.  Please join James for the launch of his book on Sunday October 14th at Chapters in downtown Victoria between 11 AM to 5 PM.

James, who is also the creator of an award-winning sport card game by the same name, said the idea for the book came directly from the game.  “The card game gave me the idea for The STRIKERZ book series,” said James, “but it really comes out of my life experience living in tough economic times as a child and as an adult. The StrikerZ face poverty, hunger, teasing, racism and some irresponsible parents. The story alternates between pulsating soccer action and a heart-warming story about kids doing their best to play a game they love.”

James visited a number of minor soccer associations across Victoria to conduct background research for the book and many of Victoria’s soccer playing youth serve as prominent characters in the story.  “Victoria kids ‘star’ as the characters of the story,” said James. “Their photos appear in the book and online. They were all ‘scouted’ for each character. I went to Greater Victoria soccer fields and scouted them and talked to their parents. The parents and kids are all behind the project and very supportive!”

The kids in the story are from the Juan de Fuca, Gorge, Sidney, Salt Spring Island and Victoria areas.

Book Trailer

Thirteen-year-old EZ Taylor knows that his soccer team, the StrikerZ, has the talent to be champions.  They even dream of turning pro for the top clubs in Europe, one day.

But who will ever see them play? The multi-ethnic kids, from small-town Nova Scotia, don’t even own uniforms or cleats. And they’ve never competed in a real League game. Some of them don’t even know where their next meal will come from, or if they’ll have a sober parent when they get home.

Fred Jones, a wealthy business man, knows these kids because he used to be like them.  When he meets EZ, Lukas and Danny at summer camp, he vows to give the StrikerZ the opportunities they need to succeed.

But the StrikerZ learn that money alone won’t fix every problem. Sometimes you have to change what’s inside to become a champion.
