October 12, 2012, Saskatoon, SK – With three second period goals, the University of Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey team handed the University of Saskatchewan Huskies a 3-2 loss in Saskatoon’s Rutherford Rink.
Manitoba’s Maggie Litchfield-Medd, Nellie Minshull and Jessica Carswell all scored in the frame to give the Bisons’ the road victory.
The win was the first of the season for the Bisons (1-3), while the Huskies (0-2-1) are still in search of their first win in the young Canada West season.
Saskatchewan jumped out to an early lead with a power play goal at 4:55 in the first period. Second-year defenceman Brooke Mutch tallied on a blast from the point.
The Bisons jumped out quickly in the second period to take the lead. Litchfield-Medd got the Bisons on the board with a power play goal just 2:06 into the second period. Minshull tallied just two minutes later at 4:02. Carswell added the third goal for the Bisons’ at 12:20.
Danny Stone started the bid for the comeback for the Huskies after scoring on a backhanded shot in front of the net at 13:51 in the second period. Halfway through the third period, the Huskies thought they had the tying goal but it was called back on a high stick.
Leiette Klassen made 26 saves in the win for the Bisons, while Huskie netminder Justine DeNure made 30 saves in the loss.
The two teams will meet again Saturday night at Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is 7 p.m. The game can be watched live on www.canadawest.tv
