October 12, 2012, BRANDON, MB – The Everett Silvertips rallied from an early 2-0 deficit and dominated play for long stretches on their way to a 3-2 overtime victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings Friday night at Westman Communications Group Place.
Landon Oslanski’s overtime winner gave the Silvertips their second victory of the year in the first game of their two-week East Division road swing.
Oslanski netted the winning goal in the extra session off an assist from Manraj Hayer, who scored a goal of his own earlier in the game. Trent Lofthouse also scored for the second time in as many games for Everett, tying the game with just over five minutes left in regulation. Goaltender Daniel Cotton earned the first win of his WHL career with 23 saves in net, and the ‘Tips killed off all six Brandon powerplays.
The Silvertips played a solid first period, but it was the Wheat Kings who got the breaks. John Quenneville opened the scoring, scooping up an Everett turnover and heading in alone to beat Cotton with a backhander just over five minutes in. Brandon capitalized on another turnover later in the period when Jens Meilleur buried a Quenneville pass to give the Wheat Kings a 2-0 lead after one.
Everett controlled the second stanza, skating to a 19-8 shot advantage and getting back within one midway through the period. As the ‘Tips chipped the puck out during a 4-on-4 situation, Reid Petryk emerged on a 2-on-1 rush and passed to Manraj Hayer for the finish inside the near post to make it 2-1. The Silvertips’ penalty killers kept Brandon from the extending the lead, but they still trailed 2-1 through 40 minutes despite numerous quality chances.
After two big penalty kills in the third, Everett went on the attack looking to the tie the game. They did so at 14:33 when newly-acquired defenseman Connor Cox made a long stretch pass to Trent Lofthouse, who beat Wheat Kings goaltender Curtis Honey with a top-shelf wrister to draw the ‘Tips even. Then during the overtime, Hayer rushed the puck into Brandon’s end before sliding a pass back to Oslanski, who one-timed it into the net to give Everett the win.
Daniel Cotton won in his first start as a Silvertip after stopping 23 of 25 shots in goal. Curtis Honey took the loss despite 30 saves as the ‘Tips outshot the Wheat Kings 33-25 in total. Everett’s penalty killers had a strong 6 for 6 performance, while the powerplay was 0 for 5.
