October 13, 2012, Victoria, BC – Despite two very hard fought battles, the hosting Camosun College Chargers men’s and women’s volleyball teams were unsuccessful in taking down their opponents tonight, ending their double header weekend against the VIU Mariners with a pair of losses.
On the women’s side, the Chargers and Mariners were evenly paced early in the first, going to a 7 point tie before VIU blasted ahead to lead 18-11. Despite making some headway, the Chargers could not close the gap and the set ended 25-20 in favor of VIU. The Mariners asserted their dominance early in the second set leading 8-2 and maintaining the advantage for the remainder of the set to shut the home team down in double digits (25-15). The Chargers came back in the third, tying five times with their opponents and taking a 5 point lead (18-13) before the Mariners regrouped with a 6 point run to move their game forward. It was a tight match from there as the teams dueled it out to the finish. The Mariners took the third set 25-23 to win the match.
Women’s Final Score
VIU 3 – 0 Camosun
(25-20, 25-15, 25-23)
Camosun middle Morgan Marshall (Smithers, BC) led the Chargers a second night with 4 kills, 2 aces and 1 dig. Third-year left side Hilary Graham posted 4 kills, 1 ace and 4 digs while newcomer Natalie Delange from Courtenay (GP Vanier) scored 5 kills.
The Camosun men also fell tonight, despite a strong start by the home team who crushed their opponents 25-11 in the first set. A fired-up VIU squad came out swinging in the second to even the score at one game apiece with a 25-23 win. Camosun bounced back in the third to win another close set 25-22 but lost the fourth to the Mariners who were relentless in their pursuit. VIU poured it on in the fifth taking advantage of three lost serves by Camosun to win 15-9.

Note: Last night’s leader for Camosun was fifth-year left side Garrett Marcellus (Oak Bay) who posted 7 digs plus 15 offensive points (11 kills, 2 aces and 2 blocks).
Next up for the Chargers volleyball teams are their first road games of the 2012-13 season. Camosun travels to Abbotsford next weekend to face off against the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades.
