October 14, 2012, Saskatoon, SK – Two first half goals gave the visiting UBC Thunderbirds a 2-0 shutout over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday afternoon in CIS men’s soccer action on Field 7 in Saskatoon’s PotashCorp Park.
UBC jumped onto the board quickly in the match scoring in the seventh and 19th minutes for the victory.
With the win, UBC remains undefeated on the season with a 9-0-1 record. Saskatchewan falls to 5-4-2. Just four matches remain in the Canada West men’s soccer schedule.
Thunderbird Steve Johnson opened the scoring in the match just seven minutes in when a through ball by Marco Visinton was sent his way. Johnson was able to send the ball straight into the right side of the net past a diving Huskie keeper Mark Diakiw.
Greg Smith was able to give the T-Birds the 2-0 lead after a scramble in front of the net. With a crowd within the six-yard box and a bouncing ball, Smith was able to pot the ball on a deflection into the net in the 19th minute.
UBC keeper Rich Meister earned his second shutout of the season making two saves in the win. Diakiw made six for the Huskies. The T-Birds outshot the Huskies 10-6.
The Huskies travel to Calgary to meet the Calgary Dinos next weekend, while UBC returns home to host the Victoria Vikes.
