OTTAWA (CIS) – Nour Ghoneim, a soccer player from YorkUniversity, and Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, a cross country runnerfrom Laval University, are the CIS female and male athletes of theweek for the period ending Oct. 14, 2012.

Ghoneim, a first-year liberal arts student from Toronto, scoredsix of the Lions’ eight goals last week as York postedback-to-back shutout wins over UOIT, 2-0, and Brock, 6-0.

The5-foot-7 forward accounted for all the scoring last Wednesdayagainst the Ridgebacks, and then exploded for four goals on Sundayagainst the Badgers, including a natural hat trick with thematch’s first three markers. Ghoneim, who has played withCanada’s junior national team at the under-17 and U19 levels,currently sits fifth in OUA scoring with nine goals despiteappearing in only seven contests.

Moncton hockey player Catherine Dumas, Sherbrooke volleyballplayer Roxane Hasseni and Alberta rugby player Chelsea Guthrie werealso nominated for the women’s award.

Philibert-Thiboutot, a third-year business administrationstudent from Quebec City, won individual gold on Saturday at theUNB-St. Thomas Invitational in Fredericton, taking first place in afield of 117 runners from 12 RSEQ and AUS schools. The 21-year-oldfinished the eight-kilometre race in 24:46.2, missing the courserecord by only one second. His performance helped the Rouge et Orcapture the men’s team title by a comfortable 11-pointmargin.

Hockey players Tyler Brown of UPEI, Stephen Blunden of Ottawaand Scott Wasden of UBC were the other male nominees.
