Five Vees Invited to Canada West Selection Camp


October 19, PENTICTON, BC – The Penticton Vees Junior Hockey Club is pleased to announce five players have been invited to Team Canada West Selection Camp for the 2012 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge (WJAC).

“We are very proud to have 5 players selected for the Canada West selection camp; all 5 will make a strong case to make the team,” comments Vees Head Coach & GM Fred Harbinson. Chad Katunar (93), Mike Rebry (93), Wade Murphy (93), Troy Stecher (94) and Dexter Dancs (95), will take part in the camp, from October 28th to November 1st at Hockey Canada headquarters in Calgary.

Katunar, 19, has played in 10 games this season for the Vees, fashioning together an 8-1-0-1 record, while sporting a 1.93 goals-against average and a .933 save-percentage. Katunar, who’s committed to Notre Dame next season, has a share of the BCHL lead in shutouts (2) and wins (8). Troy Stecher, 18, played on Canada West’s 2011 gold medal-winning team in Langley. Last spring, Stecher was also named the top defenseman at the RBC Cup in Humboldt. To date, Stecher has nine points in 13 games

Upfront, Dexter Dancs, 17, is in his first season with the Vees after a successful year in the KIJHL with Osoyoos. Dancs was named the 2012 KIJHL Rookie of the Year

after he amassed 67 points in 42 games with the Coyotes. Dancs’s breakout season earned him a scholarship to Michigan for the fall of 2014. Recently, he was named a ‘C’ list draft prospect by NHL Central Scouting. Murphy, 19, is in his second season with the Vees and is currently tied for the BCHL scoring lead with 20 points through 11 games; a league best 11 game point-streak, too. The Victoria product also is committed to the University of North Dakota for 2013. Rebry, 19, is enjoying a fantastic start to his rookie campaign. The 19 year-old leads the BCHL in goals (10) and sits tied for lead in short-handed markers with two. Rebry is third in BCHL scoring with 18 points. He is already committed to Western Michigan University, for the 2014 season.

Last year, Troy Stecher, Curtis Loik and Travis St. Denis represented the Vees at the 2011 WJAC. Since the tournament’s inception in 2006, 16 Vees have played in the Challenge; 13 on Team Canada West. Travis St. Denis and Joey Laleggia are the only Vees to have played twice in the tournament. Team Canada West will name its final roster on November 2. The 2012 WJAC takes place in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia from November 3 to November11.
