Huskies edge out Vikes in Wolfpack Invitational opener

October 19, 2012, VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team were bested 71-70 by the Saskatchewan Huskies in their opening game of their road pre-season tour at the Wolfpack Invitational hosted by Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C.

The tournament runs from Oct. 19-21 and features the Vikes, Huskies, Grant MacEwan University and hosts, the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack.

Veteran Debbie Yeboah (Winnipeg, MB) lead the way for the Vikes as she totaled 19 points, 2 assists and was two-for-three on three pointers. Fifth-year Chelsea McMullen(Prince George, B.C.) was also a heavy contributor, adding 17 points and two steals.

The Vikes were on-par with the Huskies throughout the majority of the game ending the first quarter tied 19-19 and out-scoring the Huskies in the second quarter only 9-8. The Vikes ran away with the game in the third quarter, gaining a nine-point advantage thanks to some solid jumpers by first-year Vike Jenna Bugiardini (Hamilton, ON).

The Huskies turned their game around in the fourth quarter out-scoring the Vikes 24-13 to earn the one-point advantage that secured the game. Veteran Dalyce Emmersonshot the lights out with an impressive 22 points for the Huskies, while Kaylee Halvorson and Kabree Howard each added 11 points.

The Vikes will continue competition tomorrow, Oct. 20, against Grant MacEwan University at 8 p.m. and on Oct. 21 against hosts, the Wolfpack, at 11 a.m. The Vikes will also be travelling to Ontario for a tour of teams from Oct. 25-28 and will face McMaster, Guelph, Toronto and Western University before kicking off their home openers on Nov. 2-3 against UBC Okanagan.
