October 20, 2012, Victoria, BC – The South Island Royals erased a three goal deficit en route to a 5-3 win over the North Island Silvertips in BC Hockey Major Midget League action Saturday at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria.
In a Saturday afternoon matchup at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre the South Island Royals entertained the North Island Silvertips in the first game of a home-and-home weekend set. Jesse Jenks took to the Royals crease well Liam Giroux earned the start for the Silvertips.
The Silvertips opened the scoring less than three minutes in off a marker from Curtis McCarrick. Forward Joe Surgenor let a shot go from the right point that Jenks stopped, but McCarrick pounced on the rebound for the easy tap-in. McCarrick would grab his second of the game only minutes later when he received a pass in the high slot and put a shot over the glove of the Royals’ netminder.
Patrick Bajkov would put the Silvertips up 3-0 before the halfway point after he capitalized on a turnover in front of the South Island net. With less than a minute left in the frame, Royals’ forward Ryan Kelm broke in alone shorthanded and put a deke between the legs of Giroux to cut the goal deficit to two. After 20 minutes of play North Island held a 3-1 lead.
South Island notched the only goal late into the second period. On the man-advantage, Kelm circled around the right corner and put a shot on Giroux. The Silvertips’ goaltender made the first save, but Cam MacKay was in the crease to bury the rebound. North Island took a 3-2 lead into the final period.
The Royals would complete the comeback eight minutes into the third. From the right boards forward Cole Pickup made a move to the inside before putting a shot on the Silvertips’ keeper. Giroux made the right pad stop, but Jordan Martin crashed the crease and put the rebound into the net. South Island would then grab their first lead of the game less than three minutes later when Pickup deflected Garrett Stankoven’s point shot past the blocker of Giroux. Nick Guiney would round out the game’s scoring with the Royals’ fifth after he broke down the left side on a 2-on-1 and fired a shot through the legs of Giroux. Royals 5 Silvertips 3
