October 26, 2012, EVERETT – The Everett Silvertips built a 6-2 lead through two periods to run their win streak to four straight games with a 6-5 win over the Spokane Chiefs Friday night at Comcast Arena.
Following their first home victory of the season, the Silvertips stand just one game below .500 heading into Saturday’s “Pink the Rink” matchup with Seattle.
Kohl Bauml scored twice and five other players enjoyed multi-point nights for Everett, who finished with 12 different players recording at least one point. After getting his first career point on Bauml’s first period goal, defenseman Ben Betker then scored his first WHL goal, which also turned out to be the game winner in the second period. Daniel Cotton also ran his personal win streak to four straight games with 29 saves between the Everett pipes.
The Silvertips got off to a quick start in the contest, outscoring Spokane 4-1 in the first 20 minutes. Tyler Sandhu opened scoring for the ‘Tips on a 2-on-1 rush, beating Eric Williams with a top-corner wrist shot. Everett added to the lead when Ryan Harrison rushed the puck up the ice and had his initial shot was stopped before Reid Petryk banged in the rebound. Mirco Mueller made it 3-0 when his shot from the blueline deflected off a defenseman and in. The Chiefs scored their first of the night after a scramble in front of the net as Carter Chartier batted a loose puck behind Daniel Cotton, but Kohl Bauml responded on the very next shift with a laser just inside the goalpost from the right side to make it 4-1 Everett and chase Williams for the Spokane net.
The Chiefs got on the board first in the second on Reid Gow’s goal through traffic just off a faceoff, but the ‘Tips responded with two scores of their own to extend the lead after 40 minutes. Bauml tallied his second of the game after a stretch pass up the ice from Reid Petryk, lifting the puck over the Spokane replacement goaltender Garret Hughson. The Silvertips extended the lead to four as Ben Betker snuck a long point shot through traffic and in for his first WHL goal at 13:50 of the second.
Trailing 6-2 in the third period, Spokane turned up the pressure to start a comeback. Dylan Walchuk tipped in Connor Chartier’s centering feed just over five minutes into the third, which was followed just over 30 seconds later by Todd Fiddler’s unassisted goal that made it 6-4. Then with just over four minutes left, Fiddler snuck a shot under Daniel Cotton from the left boards to draw the Chiefs within one before Everett finished out the win in the final minutes.
Spokane outshot Everett 34-26 in the game, but Cotton made 29 saves in the win. Eric Williams stopped four out of eight shots in 17 minutes before being replaced by Garret Hughson, who denied 16 of 18 in 41 minutes before being tagged with the loss. The ‘Tips were 0 for 3 on the powerplay, but held the Chiefs scoreless on both of their chances.
Everett will now take on the Seattle Thunderbirds Saturday at 7:05 pm in our fourth annual “Pink the Rink” game to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. A sold-out crowd is expected as the Silvertips look to raise over $100,000 to aid in early detection of breast cancer right here in our community.
