Wins for Capilano, James Bay and UVic

October 27, 2012, VANCOUVER – Kitsilano’s Meraloma Rugby Club posted their third straight win on Saturday, ending Bayside’s undefeated run at South Surrey Athletic Park with a 27-5 decision. In rematches of last year’s Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League semifinals, Capilano again defeated Oak Bay’s Castaway Wanderers while James Bay Athletic Association narrowly defeated Burnaby Lake Rugby Club. The UVic Vikes downed UBCOB Ravens 18-13 at home and are now 3-0 at Wallace Field including their non-Premier League ‘Boot’ victory over the UBC Thunderbirds.

Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League – Sat. October 27th:

  • Capilano RFC 22 – 9 Castaway Wanderers RFC
  • Burnaby Lake 19(+1) – 20 James Bay AA
  • Meraloma Rugby Club 27(+1) – 5 Bayside AA
  • UBCOB Ravens 13(+1) – 18 UVic Vikes
  • Burnaby Lake 19(+1) – 20 James Bay AA

A day after being selected for Canada’s senior men’s national team heading to the UK in November, James Bay fly half Connor Braid showed why he is quickly climbing the ranks as one of the country’s elite kickers. With his side down 19-17 to Burnaby Lake Rugby Club on Saturday, Braid converted a game-winning penalty through torrential downpour to lift his side to a 20-19 win. James Bay tries were scored by Jeff Hassler and Morgan Williams and Braid added two conversions and two penalties for the final score of 20-19. Burnaby’s tries were recorded by Javier Valle and Joe Dolesau with fly half James Reekie contributing three penalties. With the win James Bay improve to 3-1 and Burnaby trop to 1-3.

Capilano RFC 22 – 9 Castaway Wanderers RFC

In a rematch of last year’s semifinal upset, Capilano RFC again came out on top with a 22-9 win over the Oak Bay Castaway Wanderers. Canada U20 graduate Matt Yanagiya kicked a penalty and a conversion with another conversion tacked on by Chris Robinson. Capilano had three tries recorded by Mike MacDonald, Shaun Wilson and Will Phillipson. All three CW penalties were recorded by Fraser Lyle. Capilano now sit second in the standings at 4-2 while Burnaby fall to 1-3.

UBCOB Ravens 13(+1) – 18 UVic Vikes

The UVic Vikes won their second game in a row and move to 3-2 on the season. UVic’s three tries were recorded by Beau Parker, Luke McCloskey and Luke Campbell with a penalty from Nathan Hiryama. A close loss for the Ravens drops them to 1-3-1 but this is their third straight game where they have picked up at least a bonus point, which sees them lead Burnaby by three points in the standings. Up next the Ravens head to Connaught Park in a West Side derby against table leaders Meralomas.

Meraloma Rugby Club 27(+1) – 5 Bayside AA

Since dropping a narrow 28-24 decision against James Bay back on September 22nd, Meraloma are winners of three straight and sit top of the standings with a game-in-hand over second place Capilano. The Lomas lead 22-0 at the break today and conceded just one try when Bayside’s Cody Rockson went over for the score. The defeat was the first for Bayside at home this season as they drop to 2-1 at South Surrey Athletic Park and 2-4 overall.
