October 28, 2012, Nanaimo, B.C. – The North Island Silvertips dropped a pair of BC Hockey Major Midget league games to the visiting Cariboo Cougars, this past weekend, losing on Saturday and dropping a 5-2 decision Sunday.

On Saturday, the Cougar’s Tyler Povelofskie made good on a third period penalty shot which stood up as the game winner as the Cougars downed the Silvertips 4-2.

The Cats badly outshot the Silvertips as North Island goalie Liam Young kept his team in the game during a barrage of first period shots.

Liam Blackburn scored his eighth of the season in the sixth minute of the first from Brad Morrison and Braiden Epp to give the Cougars the early lead. Stephen Penner pounced on a rebound in the second after Blackburn rang one off the post to put the Cats up 2-0 heading into the final frame.

Povelofskie’s penalty shot made it 3-0 before the Tips got two quick ones including a deflection off of Penner to make it a one goal game with 13 minutes to go.

Riley Pettitt then scored his second of the season from Michael Bell and Tre Potskin to give the Cats some breathing room as the visitors earned their third straight win and improved their record to a BCMML best 9-2. Morrison and Blackburn both finished the game with two points.

Nathan Warren earned his sixth win of the season in net for the Cats.

In Sunday’s action, the Cougar’s had another strong special teams performance powering their way to a 5-2 win to earn the weekend sweep.

The Tips got on the board first early in the opening frame while Kirk Hards evened it at one scoring on the power play late in the period.

The Silvertips regained the lead in the second before Cougar captain Ryan Forbes one-timed an Eli Jarvis pass past North Island starter Liam Giroux. Tyler Povelofskie gave the Cats their first lead of the game with a sharp wristshot, his second goal of the weekend and seventh in his last four games.

With just 2.6 seconds left in the middle frame, Braiden Epp scored on a shorthanded breakaway on a pass from Liam Blackburn to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead going into the third. Blackburn then scored his ninth of the season on the power play midway through the final frame.

Jeremy Matte earned his second win in as many starts, his fourth of the season stopping 25 Silvertip shots.

The win moves the Cats to 10-2 on the season, first place in the BCMML. The Cougars take their four game win streak into Kelowna next weekend where they face the Okanagan Rockets Saturday and Sunday.
