October 29, 2012, EDMONTON – Calgary QB Eric Dzwilewski, Saskatchewan Huskies DB Mitch Friesen and Manitoba Bisons return specialist Anthony Coombs are Canada West football Players of the Week.

OFFENCE: #11 Eric Dzwilewski, Calgary

Third-year quarterback Eric Dzwilewski directed the Calgary offence with the most efficient game in University of Calgary history as the No. 3-ranked Dinos wrapped up a 7-1 season with a wild 78-54 win over Manitoba on Saturday night at McMahon Stadium.

Playing just the first half, Dzwilewski completed his first 18 passes and finished 25-for-27 on the night, a school-record 92.6 per cent completion rate. He threw for 318 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Dinos built up a massive 63-14 lead in the opening half, scoring 42 points in the second quarter alone.

The game wrapped up a career season for Dzwilewski. He finished with a Canada West-record 70.6 completion percentage on the year, throwing for 2,290 yards – the third-best season in Dinos history – and 15 touchdowns. The offence he leads set nine team single-season records, including points scored (380), touchdowns (42), first downs (272), passing yards (2,997), completions (213), completion percentage (71.7), converts (42), field goals (22), and total offence (4,720).

Dzwilewski and the Dinos are right back at it against the Bisons Saturday when they host Manitoba in a Canada West semifinal game, live on Shaw TV and, from McMahon Stadium. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m.

DEFENCE: #24 Mitch Friesen, Saskatchewan

Mitch Friesen of the Saskatchewan Huskies helped his team to a 54-24 victory over UBC Thunderbirds with two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Friesen, a fifth-year defensive back from Saskatoon, snared his first interception in the first quarter returning it 50 yards. He added his second in the second quarter returning it seven yards. His fumble recovery also came in the second quarter.

The Education student also added 5.5 tackles in the game.

Friesen and the Huskies will travel to Regina to meet the Regina Rams in a Canada West semifinal Friday night. Kick off is 7 p.m. in Mosaic Stadium.

SPECIAL TEAMS: #1 Anthony Coombs, Manitoba

Manitoba Bisons running back/kick returner Anthony Coombs was a standout during a wild 78-54 road loss at Calgary in the last conference regular season game for both teams. He scored three different ways – running, receiving and special teams. His 98-yard touchdown punt return at the start of the third quarter began a 40 point outburst from the Bisons after they were down 63-14 at half.

The second-year back weaved his way through numerous players to jump start Manitoba after a tough first half. His electrifying punt return was his first punt return for a touchdown this season.

Overall, the Winnipeg native had four punt returns for 107 yards and 1 TD plus a kickoff return for 10 yards on special teams in the loss.

Coombs is one of two players, with teammate Nic Demski, to score a punt return touchdown in Canada West action this season. Coombs also tied for first in conference touchdowns this season, with nine.

#10 Manitoba (4-4) now travels back to play at #3 Calgary in the Hardy Cup semifinal match-up on Saturday, November 3 with kickoff at 5:00 p.m. MT at McMahon Stadium.
